- Unusual Lyrics
Reading aloud is a calming and focusing activity for one of my young students. Each lesson, we take a few minutes where she reads an “own choice” book to me. Recently, she chose Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, and we smiled together at the quirky rhymes and the playful rhythms they created. Those unusual lyrics became a springboard: first, we clapped the rhythms, then turned them into a rhythmic composition on the black keys. You may not be reading Dr. Seuss in your lessons, but unusual lyrics or poems can be a joyful launchpad for rhythm exploration and creative composing prompts. ✨ Creativity is everywhere—sometimes it’s hiding in a breakfast you wouldn’t eat on a train or in the rain.
- An Unconditional Welcome
This week, in response to a deep question, I found myself telling an adult student: “Your time with me comes without conditions— you are unconditionally welcome here.” This wasn’t about policy or payment, but something much deeper. It left me reflecting on how powerful it is to say to someone: “You belong here.” As music educators, our studios can become more than learning spaces—they can be places of refuge, connection, and growth. What a gift we offer when we create spaces where students feel seen and safe, just as they are.
