1. Sparking Curiosity

I love inviting piano students to ask, “I wonder if…” This year, my goal has been to help them see the value of finger planning—not just by following my suggestions, but by developing the tools to make choices that foster comfort, efficiency, and musicality.

We often explore different ideas and listen for shifts in sound and comfort. I see students becoming more curious, and it has been so helpful—not only in their lesson work but also when they detour into the wild world of YouTube piano tutorials. Gasp!

​2. Embracing Ease
​
Lately, I’ve been loving Google Classroom for lesson notes and resource organization. It integrates seamlessly with the Google tools students already recognize, allows me to include a Google Meet link for online lessons, and keeps everything more organized.
​
​Parents, students, and teachers all have access to notes throughout the week, making communication smoother.
Coil-bound notebooks, personalized piano binders, specialized platforms… carrier pigeons?

3. A Musical Legacy

Randi Botnen (1976–2025) left a beautiful legacy for pianists and teachers this year. Faced with the unimaginable news that she was in her final months, she chose to publish her stunning piano music as a gift to the music teaching community.

I was honoured to record her intermediate piano solo, Capriccio, and I hope her music finds its place in many homes, bringing beauty to all who play and listen.
